All jewellery should be treasured and looked after, so here are some handy tips to help you keep your treasured items in tip top condition.
Sterling silver will tarnish, especially when exposed to the air and environment. One way to stop your jewellery from tarnishing is to wear it as this slows down the tarnishing process.
When you are not wearing your jewellery we recommend keeping it stored away in a jewellery box or a zip lock bag as this will cut down the amount of tarnish that builds up. Before popping your jewellery away give it a quick rub with a soft cloth.
Do not store your jewellery in the bathroom, on the windowsill or near the radiator as warm, damp conditions speeds up the tarnishing process. For this reason, remove jewellery before bathing and showering.
Treat your jewellery carefully – take your jewellery off before doing the gardening, housework or anything rough. Also take your jewellery off at night.
Chlorine and salt can damage jewellery so do not wear your jewellery to go swimming or when visiting the beach.
Perfume, skin and hair products can damage jewellery and gemstones, especially pearls. Always apply products before putting on your jewellery and leave a few minutes for the products to soak in before putting your jewellery on.
Jewellery should be the last item you put on when getting ready and the first item you remove when getting undressed. This will stop the item of jewellery from any unnecessary damage.
If your jewellery does get dirty, a silver dip solution is the best way to clean it. Dip your items as directed on the packaging and always rinse thoroughly in warm soapy water to remove any residue.
If jewellery is particularly dirty, rubbing with a soft brush (like an old baby toothbrush) and some silver dip solution can help. Again, remember to rinse thoroughly.
Soft stones, like pearls or turquoise, can damage in silver-dip so please be very careful. We would recommend that you never dip an item with pearls – always use a cloth instead.
